Ha Long to Lan Ha in one day from Hanoi

A long day out of Hanoi: bus to Tuan Chau, then a big day cruiser that sails through Ha Long into Lan Ha, lands on Cat Ba for a cave and the national park museum, and anchors at Tra Bau to swim. It is the only way on this site to see Lan Ha without a night away, with the transfers included.

Hanoi Day Cruise: Ha Long to Lan Ha & Cat Ba

About this experience

Start with the clock, because it is the honest part of this tour. Pickup in the Hanoi Old Quarter runs 7:10 to 7:45, you check in at Tuan Chau around 11:00, the boat is back at the marina at 18:00 and you are dropped off in Hanoi at about 21:00. That is close to 14 hours door to door; the 7-hour figure on the listing is the boat-only option for people already in Ha Long.

This boat starts in Ha Long, not Lan Ha. Lunch is served while it crosses from Ha Long Bay to Cat Ba, and the Lan Ha part of the day runs from early afternoon until the sunset party on the way back. In between: an electric car up the forest road on Cat Ba to Trung Trang Cave and the Cat Ba National Park museum, then Tra Bau for kayaking, swimming, a two-level water slide and an inflatable floating pool. Kayaking is on the itinerary; on some days crews switch to a rowed bamboo boat at the caves, because Lan Ha's kayaking rules have changed several times since late 2024.

The Tropical Cruise is a large day boat with a jacuzzi on the sundeck, so it carries more people than a Cat Ba day boat, though several guests say theirs was the only boat at the swim spot. Drinks at the bar and at meals cost extra, and a holiday surcharge applies at Tet. Children aged 3 to 5 pay half, from 6 they pay the adult price. The boat is not suitable for wheelchair users.

Long was an amazing guide. He was welcoming and friendly as well as knowledgeable. The absolute highlight of the trip was the kayaking and swimming, the spot was completely empty of boats except ours and the scenery was just unbelievable. Thank you Long for a great day!

Minh was an AMAZING tour guide. This was a 10/10 experience. Not touristy with big crowds. We loved kayaking and swimming in the bay. I would highly recommend this tour.

Food was also good and I was very happy with the fact that most of the tour our group was the only tourists in sight so it was pretty peaceful. The only thing I would have liked is a bit more time to explore Cat Ba Island (instead of the silk shop stop on our way there) [...] Highly recommend!

Tips before you book

  • Pick the pickup point nearest your hotel when you book; the earliest bus leaves at 7:10.
  • Expect a shop stop on the bus ride. One guest would have traded it for more time on Cat Ba.
  • Wear swimwear under your clothes: the swim, slide and kayak come in one block after 15:15.
  • Bring cash for drinks. Nothing at the bar is included, lunch drinks either.
  • Child prices go by birth year, not birthday: 3 to 5 pay half, 6 and up pay full.
