Lan Ha Bay vs Halong Bay

Two names for one limestone seascape, split by a provincial line. Here is what actually changes between them, from the harbour you leave from to the beach you swim at.

Ask ten people in Hanoi which bay is better and you get ten answers, most of them from someone selling a boat. The plain version: Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay are the same karst landscape. Since 2023 UNESCO lists them as one World Heritage site, Ha Long Bay - Cat Ba Archipelago, Vietnam's first that crosses a provincial border. Ha Long sits in Quang Ninh province. Lan Ha is the Hai Phong side, off the east coast of Cat Ba Island.

What differs is everything around the rocks: how many boats share the water, how far it is from Hanoi, whether your day is caves or beaches. And, the part most listings skip, where your boat actually starts.

The quick answer

Pick Lan Ha if you want quieter water, small beaches and more time swimming and kayaking. Pick a Ha Long start if you are short on time: it is about 2 to 2.5 hours from Hanoi, against 4 to 5.5 hours to Cat Ba. Most overnight cruises split the difference, leaving Tuan Chau in Ha Long and sailing into Lan Ha.

What is the difference between Lan Ha Bay and Halong Bay?

Geography, mostly not. Lan Ha is the southern, Hai Phong end of the same karst field; the differences are traffic, beaches, the caves you visit and how long it takes to get there.

Lan Ha holds about 400 limestone islands and more than 130 small beaches, many of them reachable only by boat. Ha Long, to the north-east, is the bigger and far better known half, with the large show caves and the largest choice of luxury ships. Across both, the World Heritage property counts 1,133 islands and islets over 65,650 ha, per UNESCO.

The two provinces run their bays separately, which matters more than you would think. Hai Phong charges about 120,000 VND (roughly $5) per adult for Lan Ha in 2026. Quang Ninh sells its own Ha Long route tickets, from about 290,000 VND on the classic routes, under a 2017 provincial resolution that the Ha Long Bay Management Board says still applies. On the cruises here both are folded into "all entry fees". The full fee picture is in the 2026 bay ticket post.

Is Lan Ha Bay as good as Halong Bay?

Yes. The rock towers, the green water and the floating villages are the same; Lan Ha simply gives you more of them without a queue of ships in the frame.

People expecting a lesser copy are usually surprised. The karst is continuous, and the boundary between the two bays runs through open water you would never notice from the deck. What you lose in Lan Ha is the big-name caves and the short drive. What you gain is anchorages where your boat is one of a few, and beaches small enough that a day boat can have one to itself for an hour.

Guests say it better than any brochure. These are from a day cruise that starts in Ha Long and spends its afternoon in Lan Ha:

★★★★★

The absolute highlight of the trip was the kayaking and swimming, the spot was completely empty of boats except ours and the scenery was just unbelievable.

Is Lan Ha Bay better than Halong Bay?

For time in the water, yes. For a short trip with the famous caves and the least travel, Ha Long is the easier choice, and a cruise that starts there and crosses into Lan Ha gives you a bit of both.

Lan Ha wins on three things: swimming from the boat or a beach, kayaking through low rock tunnels into enclosed lagoons such as Ao Ech, and land you can actually walk on. Cat Ba National Park covers more than 17,000 ha, and boats tie up at Viet Hai, a village inside the park that you cycle into.

Ha Long wins on access and choice. It is the closer bay, it has the widest range of overnight ships, and its caves are the ones in the postcards. If your heart is set on standing inside a cathedral-sized cavern, go Ha Long. If you would rather spend that hour swimming, go Lan Ha. One caveat on the paddling: kayaking is on the itinerary, but on some days crews switch to a rowed bamboo boat at the caves, so check the listing for kayak or bamboo boat before you book.

How do the boats differ between the two bays?

Ha Long has the big hotel-style ships, almost all leaving Tuan Chau. Lan Ha's own fleet from Ben Beo is smaller: day boats, a few compact overnight cruisers and the occasional homestay trip.

The cruise ships on this site that start at Tuan Chau run group sizes of up to 40 to 60, with balcony cabins, bathtubs and, on the top tier, a pool and spa. They sail through Ha Long first and then into Lan Ha for the kayak and swim stops. Boats that start at Ben Beo are a different scale. The Venezia 2-day cruise runs a 5-cabin and a 10-cabin boat with groups of up to 15, and the small-group day cruise offers an option capped at 10 people.

Neither is better in itself. A big ship is steadier, has more space and more activities; a small boat gets into narrower channels and feels more like a day out with friends. Pick the boat first, then the bay often picks itself.

Which bay has the better beaches, caves and wildlife?

Beaches and wildlife: Lan Ha. Caves: Ha Long, if you mean big show caves; Lan Ha, if you mean paddling through a low tunnel into a hidden lagoon.

  • Ha Long's caves. Sung Sot, the Cave of Surprises, is the classic: a huge chamber split into two halls. Nearby Ti Top island adds a crescent of white sand and a short trail to a 360-degree view.
  • Lan Ha's beaches. Ba Trai Dao (Three Peaches) is its own island, reached only by boat, and access depends on the tide. Van Boi and Cat Dua on Monkey Island are others the day boats use.
  • The border cave. Dark and Bright Cave (Sang Toi) sits where the two bays meet, a low tunnel into a lagoon. Several Tuan Chau cruises use it as their Lan Ha stop.
  • Wildlife. The Cat Ba langur, a golden-headed primate, lives only on Cat Ba. About 90 were counted in 2024, which makes it one of the rarest primates on earth. Some day boats pass the cliffs where it lives; a sighting is luck, not a promise.

Which is better, a Halong Bay cruise or a Lan Ha Bay cruise?

For most first-timers, a "both bays" cruise from Tuan Chau: shorter road trip, bigger ship, and the swim and kayak stops in Lan Ha. Pick a Lan Ha-only cruise from Ben Beo if quiet water matters more than the drive.

Here is the honest trade. A Tuan Chau start means a 2 to 2.5 hour shuttle from Hanoi, lunch on board as the ship sails out through Ha Long, then Lan Ha in the afternoon. You see both, but part of your time on the water is Ha Long. That is the shape of the 2-day 5-star cruise (from $126, 4.8 from 6,189 reviews), the balcony and bathtub cruise (from $110) and the 6-star Azura (from $179).

A Ben Beo start puts you in Lan Ha from the first minute, and the boat never enters Ha Long Bay. The cost is the road: Cat Ba is 4 to 5.5 hours from Hanoi by bus and ferry. The Venezia cruise (from $125) handles that bus for you. The full line-up, with every cruise side by side, is in the best Lan Ha Bay cruise guide.

How far is each bay from Hanoi?

Tuan Chau in Ha Long is about 150 km from Hanoi, 2 to 2.5 hours on the expressways. Cat Ba, the gateway to Lan Ha, takes 4 to 5.5 hours by bus and car ferry, or 3 to 4 hours by private car.

The Cat Ba buses ride the car ferry from Dong Bai to Cai Vieng, about 20 minutes on the water. Older guides still send people to Got pier: it closed to public ferries in March 2024, so ignore them. You can also take the train to Hai Phong and the high-speed boat from Ben Binh to Cat Ba town, which has only a few sailings a day and fewer in winter. Every route is laid out in Hanoi to Lan Ha Bay, and the ferry changes have their own post.

This is why the start pier matters so much. With one free day, a Tuan Chau day cruise such as the Hanoi day cruise to Lan Ha gets you into Lan Ha and back to Hanoi in a single (long) day. With a night or two on Cat Ba, a day boat from Ben Beo is cheaper and spends every hour in Lan Ha.

What movie was filmed in Halong Bay?

Kong: Skull Island (2017) is the big one, shot in Ha Long Bay and in Ninh Binh. And no, Forrest Gump was not filmed in Vietnam: its war scenes were shot in South Carolina.

Vietnam's National Authority of Tourism lists Ha Long Bay and the Ninh Binh karst (Van Long and Trang An) as the Kong locations. The Ha Long Bay Management Board adds a longer roll: Indochine (1992), Pan (2015) and The Creator (2023) all used the bay. One famous name is missing for a good reason. The James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies is set in Ha Long Bay, but those scenes were filmed in Phang Nga Bay in Thailand.

Forrest Gump's Vietnam sequences were shot at Hunting Island State Park in South Carolina, per the Smithsonian. If it is the Kong scenery you are after, the land version is a day trip from Hanoi: the Ninh Binh day trip rows you through the caves of Trang An (from $47). Same limestone, rice fields instead of sea.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lan Ha Bay part of the Halong Bay World Heritage site?

Yes. Since 2023 UNESCO lists one property, Ha Long Bay - Cat Ba Archipelago, which covers Ha Long Bay in Quang Ninh and the Cat Ba archipelago, including Lan Ha, in Hai Phong.

Can you see Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay on one trip?

Yes. Most overnight cruises on this site leave Tuan Chau in Ha Long and sail into Lan Ha for the kayak and swim stops, such as the 2-day 5-star cruise. The Hanoi day cruise follows the same route in one day.

Which bay is less crowded, Lan Ha or Halong?

Lan Ha. It has fewer big cruise ships and more small beaches and lagoons, so boats spread out. Ha Long is busier because it is closer to Hanoi and has the largest fleet.

Was Forrest Gump filmed in Vietnam?

No. The Vietnam War scenes in Forrest Gump were filmed in South Carolina, at Hunting Island State Park. Kong: Skull Island is the Hollywood film actually shot in Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh.
